One Third of the Way Through the Champion of Choice Challenge

My Goals for the Challenge

1. Do Six Week 100 Push Up Challenge.

I still haven't gotten back into a routine here since I had to quit the push ups. My tendinitis is subsiding somewhat but I dare not try the push ups again, especially since I know that packing up the store next week will be trying enough as it is. Tomorrow I will resume the squats and figure out what else to do on MWF in the meantime.

2. Get hired on at a seminar company (Fred Pryor, SkillPath, etc.)

DONE! I got to training in Mission, Kansas the third week in July with Fred Pryor Seminars. My training material is on the way and my first topic is going to be: Managing Multiple Priorities, Projects, and Deadlines.

3. Develop 2 keynote speeches.

Create your Killer Keynote is on the way - I've got 3 ideas, one mostly developed, and two that need fleshing out.

4. Put together ideas for a book (depending on which direction I take my keynote).

Not quite sure where to go with this one yet - still mulling it over.

There you have it - the time is flying by. This is our last week of business at the store. Saturday is the last day we are open. We'll pack up the leftovers Sunday and Monday, then I am done.

I'm headed to Las Vegas for a family get together July 10 - 16 and then to Fred Pryor Certification July 21 - 26.

Midway Through June (and Still Counting)

In case you think I forgot, I did not. I am still working on the goals I have set forth for June. I have had so much on my plate though I have not been taking the time to blog, update Facebook, or Twitter.

1. Push up / Squat Challenge - I've kind of blown it here. My tendinitis flared up again and I am not sure if it is the push ups causing it or if is because I ran out of my anti-inflammatories. I didn't renew them because I didn't think I needed them anymore. I stopped doing the push ups, got back on the anti-inflams and am waiting for one or both of them to work. In the meantime, I got out of my rhythm and stopped the squats, too. I will make the effort to start back up right after our mini-vacation.

2. I've gone to the two Fred Pryor classes I was to observe, asked lots of questions, have a list of questions to ask the recruiter on my phone call on the 19th, have a list of classes I would like to teach. I have also talked to the recruiter at SkillPath, and although he thinks I would do well with them, he said they are slow right now and I should wait to come to Kansas to audition.

3. I did my High Trust Leadership presentation for the Toastmasters Leadership Institute yesterday. I got one of the best compliments - someone said if you are not doing this for a living, you are wasting your talents. I liked the changes I made in it and my evaluator (who had seen it before) noticed some that I had made since the first time he had seen it and liked them. I got some additional feedback on how to make one part flow a bit smoother.

4. I am glad the book was on the back burner. With all of the prep work I was doing for the TLI as event coordinator as well as preparing for my session, it would have been impossible to given it any thought anyway. Now I am focused on the changeover DECM as my last job in assisting the District Governor. That took up most of my time today, except, like Rich, we celebrated my husband's birthday up at his mom's place.

Tomorrow morning we are going on a three-day trip to Walla Walla Wine Country and staying at the Marcus Whitman Hotel to celebrate David's and our friend Bob's birthday (with his wife Toni). I haven't even packed yet. I better get to bed and pack in the morning. Night all.

Realistic Choices for June

I am looking at June and it is busy for me! Sunuppers, my Advanced Toastmasters Club is putting on the Toastmasters Leadership Institute on June 13th and I am the Event Coordinator as well as a presenter. I am Special Assistant to the District Governor and we are in the midst of planning and executing the District Officer Changeover Meeting happening June 27th. Not to mention that we are closing our store June 27th with two extra days of clean up duty attached. As it gets closer it is more stressful and emotionally draining.

With that in mind, here are the choices I am making for the month of June as far as my goals go:

1. Be consistent with the 100 Push Up/200 Squat Challenge. Why? Exercise is good for me, a good stress reliever, it doesn't take much time out of my day, I can fit it in almost anywhere, anytime, my iPhone app makes it fun.

2. Continue to pursue Fred Pryor and SkillPath and have them pursue me :-). Why? This is something I have wanted to do for ten+ years, seriously, if you look back at my journals from then you will see that written in there; I need my income flow to keep flowing as flawlessly as possible, I want to prove to myself that I can do it.

3. Polish and perfect High Trust Leadership Keynote. Why? Because it is good and can keep getting better, it is already a work in progress so it will not require as much energy or brain power as tackling a new project, I have to do it anyway so I might as well take full advantage of the time I am spending on it already.

4. Put book on back burner for now, except for jotting ideas down as they come to me. Why? I have too many things in my field of vision right now and if I look at a book, I might let something else fall through the cracks, I can still be open to ideas and thoughts and as long as I take the thirty seconds to write it down it will still be there when I am ready.

That is my plan of focus for June, now off to work for me.

The Challenge Moves into Adulthood

If every day of the Champion of Choice Challenge was a year in my life, I just moved out of my teens and into my twenties - my young adult years. Let's hope I have learned some things so far.

First, let me say I have to hand it to Rich Hopkins who has been faithful about blogging and doing video updates every day. Sometimes I just run out of time to sit down and pull my thoughts together, but Rich is always there sharing the realities of his life and cheering the Champions on. I look forward to catching up with Rich every day.

One of the things I wanted to focus on the last half of this week was my TLI speech. I had a two-fold purpose: to practice and continuously improve it for Toastmasters, and to make it work for non-Toastmaster events as well.

I have been working on it each day and today I came up with a new angle, a new way to tie in all four points to make them even more cohesive - directions: be straight up, show respect up, down and sideways, move forward with continuous improvement, and get back on track with an apology.

The recruiter from SkillPath emailed me on Thursday and was still having issues watching my video. He asked me if I could send a hard copy. I made a DVD that night after work and then right after Toastmasters this morning I called Mr. Recruiter in Kansas and asked him how to address the DVD to make sure it went directly to him. He gave me the info. I went to the Post Office, did the Express Mail thing so that it will arrive there tomorrow. Nobody will be there tomorrow (So I made it "no signature necessary") but that way it will be on his desk first thing Monday morning. I emailed him and let him know and he responded favorably.

After I got the DVD started last night I went to a concert with a friend so I did not get home until 12:30. I still hadn't done my squats. And since I had to get up at 5am for my Toastmasters meeting, I didn't do them.

I did do my push ups tonight though: 12, 13, 10, 10, 15 = 60. Fifteen was the minimum on that last set and that was all I could muster. Before I move on to week three there is another test day. I'm not sure where I'll fall - doesn't matter, as long as I don't fall off track.

Good News!

Here's my good news: first thing this morning I got an email from Trainer Liaison at Fred Pryor Seminars/CareerTrack saying:
Congratulations, your audition was a hit. I am emailing to get you moved to the next phase of the process.
First thing I have to do is go to two seminars in my area, observe, meet the trainers, etc and then have a phone interview. My team at work helped me rearrange the schedule so I can go to one on Thursday and on on the 9th. We'll confirm the phone interview appointment tomorrow. I'm so excited!

Last night I said I'd work on my TLI speech when I got home tonight, but I didn't write it down in my planner. So it didn't get done. I just remembered when I looked at yesterday's entry. I worked on the DG's awards and other aspects of the TLI, but not what I said I'd do. I wrote it down in my planner for tomorrow just now so it will get done.

I did do my Squat Challenge tonight: 11, 13, 10, 10, 20 = 64. I pushed it to get to 20 on the last part. I'll probably be sore tomorrow.

Tomorrow's my day off - I can't plan my day in full until the TV man calls to let me know when he'll be here. We've been without our TV since September (real estate's been that bad). But because of some searching on the internet and some GREAT customer service, Mitsubishi is paying for 75% of our (almost $1200) bill so we can finally afford to get it fixed.

I'll work on my "at home stuff" while I am waiting for them and then tale care of the rest when I am not waiting for them. I hereby promise to work on my TLI speech tomorrow.

Monday Madness

Early morning - worked on my morning stuff (think about push ups)

Mid-morning - read to the pre-schoolers, ran errands

Noon - had lunch with my oldest friend (think about push ups)

Before work - checked prices for DECM awards

Early afternoon through night - work

During slow parts - compose letter to Sunuppers about TLI phase two

After work - talk to District Gov about awards, invitations, and set next phone appt.

Get home - say hi to David who is in bed earlier than usual because he is getting up at 4am so he can play golf marathon tomorrow (54 holes - can you believe it?) (think about push ups)

Work some more on guest list and graced members with Lt Gov Mktg. (think about push ups)

Mess around on Facebook (think about push ups)

Check to see if anybody else updated (think about push ups)

Realize it is after 11pm now and if I am going to do push ups I better get off my butt and do them or I will mess up my schedule, I'll have to change it in my planner, and I'll have to admit to you guys that I didn't do them. So I did: 9, 11, 8, 8, 15 = 51 There are you happy now? I am.

I still haven't heard from the recruiter at SkilPath yet. I got an email from the recruiter at Fred Pryor saying they received my info and thanked my contact for the referral. So now I am waiting on both of them.

I'll work on my TLI talk tomorrow evening - I'm off at 5:30 and David will be out playing golf until 9pm or so, so I have the evening to myself. I'll let you know how it goes.

Weekend of Week Two

I've had a nice Sunday. Worked on the Toastmasters Leadership Institute coming up the middle of June with my planning team. Worked on the DECM changeover meeting with the District Governor on our "going out with a bang" plans. Saw "Up" with two of my friends (great movie!). Had a wonderful salmon dinner barbecued by my husband.

Saturday, of course, I worked. But I did get my resume, cover letter, and video links emailed off to Fred Pryor so they will be there bright and early Monday morning. I also did my squats: 8, 11, 8, 8, 15 = 50. Today is my rest day on both push ups and squats. Thank goodness - I am a little sore.

That's about it for my weekend. Now for next week:

1. Continue Six Week 100 Push Up / 200 Squat Challenge.

2. Get hired on at a seminar company (Fred Pryor, SkillPath, etc.). Wait patiently...

3. Develop 2 keynote speeches. Work on High Trust Leadership - If You Build it, They Will Follow (to be given at TLI on June 13th). Keep in mind non-Toastmaster applications as I go.

4. Put together ideas for a book. Look at suggestions from Michael Shermer and Carol Tavris.

Something else I want to think about: regular blog posting on my theresafrasch.com site. I need to think about a commitment there.

Did any of you happen to see this video? It kind of reminds me of the accountability we all have with each other as we post our goals, our choices, our ups and downs. I saw the book the other day and was intrigued, and now that I saw the video - I think I might get the book.

You've Got Mail

Today I was enjoying a nice lunch out on the deck at work (78 and sunny in Seattle - how often does that happen?) listening to music on my iPhone checking Facebook, Twitter and then my email. That's when I saw the dreaded email from SkillPath (phone call good, email bad). I cursed out loud, then looked around to see if anyone heard me, then clicked open the email:
I wanted to let you know I haven’t forgotten about you. Because of internal fire walls, it has taken a while to get a computer set up to watch your video. IT tells me it should be available on Monday. Thank you for your patience, and have a great weekend!
Whew! Now I can relax and enjoy my weekend.

Shortly after that email I got another one from my Fred Pryor contact - a copy of the introduction he sent for me to the recruiter there. So now they are expecting my audition request on Monday!

I did my 100 push up challenge tonight: 8, 10, 7, 7, 15 = 47 total (a bit harder tonight)

One of the Toastmasters in my group told me my speech today could be turned into good keynote speech - controversy is good, he says.

The rest of the night I am hanging out with David and enjoying his company.

Thoroughly Thought Out Thursday

Last night we had dinner at some friends house and got home around 10pm. Since I had to get up at 5am this morning to go to my Toastmasters meeting I chose to skip writing my blog post and to go to bed early.

1. Did Day One of 200 Squats Challenge - 36 total

2. I called the recruiter from SkillPath. He said he hadn't watched the video yet (firewall issues that his IT guys were taking care of). I asked for the next step: if he likes what he sees, he will call me; if I am not a fit, he will send me a rejection email.

3. Emailed another author for feedback on speech idea, received response.

4. All authors agree my story would be good idea for book.

Worked on my speech for Toastmasters, too, which I gave this morning. I used Speech #10 from the CC manual - Inspire Your Audience and spoke on being a Champion of Choice! My premise (based on Rich's ) is that your success comes from the choices you make, so does your failure and your mediocrity.

Success comes from the choices you make, not from The Secret. You can't get what you want from life by:
  • sending your request out to the Universe
  • standing in front of the mirror chanting affirmations
  • cutting out pictures of a new house and a shiny red Corvette and putting them on your vision board
  • talking like you already have what you want
  • tricking your subconscious into believing you already own it
  • waiting for the Universe to manifest your desires

I know it doesn't work. I tried! I worked through Jack Canfield's book "The Success Principles" (which say the same thing), all 64 chapters, one at a time, doing exactly what he said. I didn't get what I wanted.

You get what you want by plain old fashioned hard work. You have to make the choice do the work to get what you want.

Then I told them about the Champion of Choice Challenge, why I was doing it, and what my goals were. I challenged all of them to be aware of the choices they make, to see if they are making choices that are leading them to success, failure, or mediocrity. I invited them to become a Champion of Choice and to follow me (and Rich) in my quest.

So if you are visiting from Green River Toastmasters - Welcome!

Whopper of a Wednesday

Here's where I stand mid-week:

1. Did my push ups - 6, 8, 6, 6, 10 - 36 total (and no I am not taking a video - I'll leave that to Rich).

2. I emailed everything SkillPath recruiter needed with a promise to call him on Thursday (my day off). Today I emailed my Fred Pryor contact and told him all my ducks were in a row and gave him everything he needed to give me a proper introduction.

3. Keynote - didn't work on HTL yet, but did email author Carol Tavris, one of the authors of Mistakes Were Made (But Not By Me) about an angle on a keynote idea and got a response back from her which I will follow up on tomorrow.

4. Nothing with book idea yet.

Tomorrow is my day off and I am choosing to:

a. Call SkillPath recruiter
b. Reply to Ms. Tavris
c. Work on Friday's speech
d. Do squats

That's it until tomorrow - good night.

App-solute Fun!

It's Tuesday of week two in the Champions of Choice Challenge. I'm having a pretty good week so far.

I have to tell you I love my iPhone! I have had it since the very first day the original one came out and I am not tired of it yet. I found an app for the 100 Push Ups challenge that tells me how many I am supposed to do on a given day, counts the seconds of rest in between each rep, and keeps track of everything for me. Awesome!

I also found an app for 200 Squats by the same person who brought you 100 Push Ups (he also has 100 Sit Ups - but I can't seem to do sit ups, crunches really, without hurting myself). So I ma going to alternate between squats and pushups and get a full body workout.

My goals for this week are:

1. Be consistent with PUC and stretch on days that aren't PU days
I did 15 squats, it was test day, I was "average" for someone of my age (not tellin')
2. Talk to my two contacts at the seminar companies I want to work for
Talked to Don who wrote me a letter of introduction to SkillPath. Got an email back from the Faculty Trainer/Recruiter saying he received a "glowing recommendation" for me to become a SkillPath instructor and to call him at my convenience.
3. While working on TLI Ed. Session, look at how to take "High Trust Leadership" from Ed. Session to Keynote
4. Sketch out my idea on paper so it's not just in my head.

I am trying to wrap up another CC before the end of the Toastmasters year so I am doing a speech on Friday. I'm going to do #10 Inspire Your Audience and see if I can inspire some other Toastmasters to join in on the fun.

One Week Into the Challenge

Week one was a doozy - an emotional roller coaster! But really now, would one expect anything less on the first week of a challenge? You know how it is: you start a diet and they have a potluck at work with all of your favorite things. You pledge to start walking every day and it rains for six days straight. Doesn't it always seem to go that way?

But anyway...It is week two and here we are:

1. Push Up Challenge- starting over because I only did one day (TODAY - I did 6, 6, 4, 4, 10)
2. Get Hired at Seminar Company - I got my speech recorded (finally!) and uploaded
3. Develop 2 Keynote Speeches - wrote to the author of a book asking for advice about and idea
4. Put Together Ideas for a Book - have an idea brewing but it depends on above

My goals for this week are:

1. Be consistent with PUC and stretch on days that aren't PU days
2. Talk to my two contacts at the seminar companies I want to work for
3. While working on TLI Ed. Session, look at how to take "High Trust Leadership" from Ed. Session to Keynote
4. Sketch out my idea on paper so it's not just in my head.

Now... off to get ready for work - let the countdown begin: (including today) 37 days left to work!

A Bit of a Derail, But Back on Track

I hate abrupt change. I hate the feeling of being derailed. I did pretty good with it the first time (when our company announced on Monday that our store was closing four weeks earlier than scheduled). I was mad at first, really mad: I'm losing four weeks of pay, we have to rush through our store closing, etc. But then I focused on the good side. That night when I did my gratitude check I wrote:
  • I'll have lots of free time coming up
  • I'll have time to write my keynote speeches
  • I'll have time to write my book
  • I'll have time to market myself
  • I'll have time to catch up on my reading
  • I'll have time to pursue the seminar companies
I actually got excited about all of the possibilities. I told my friend that I haven't seen in a few years that I could come see her in June instead of waiting until July. I told my Toastmaster District Governor that I'd have extra time in June for the final push (I'm his assistant). Wednesday morning I was invited to be a part of a workshop this summer that we'd start working on in June.

And then WHAM! Life moves fast and my speeding train was derailed. I was a casualty.

We get an email from our district manager Wednesday morning before work saying: never mind, after further consideration the company changed their mind and will keep the original closing date. (Mind you, I work for a planner company.)

I was so angry! (I could write so a million times and it wouldn't express how angry I was.) And it just got worse throughout the day. The DM wouldn't return phone calls or respond to emails so there was no further communication about what we should do. We had to change all the signage in the store (again). I could go on and on, but I won't.

At any rate - it has taken some time to readjust, to refocus, to get my attitude back in line. I will stick it out until the end of June, make the best of it, support my team members and have some fun while doing it.

Sure I'm Busy, But...

Day 3 Check-In

1. Do Six Week 100 Push Up Challenge.

I did Day One (just before bedtime, but hey, I did it).

2. Get hired on at a seminar company.

Practiced my speech that I am giving and recording tomorrow at noon.

3. Develop 2 keynote speeches.

Sought some advice on a topic I had a question about.

4. Put together ideas for a book.

Nothing yet.

I spent a lot of yesterday at work, of course, and then after work working on Toastmasters. We are in our final six week push as a District to reach Distinguished and as Assistant to the District Governor, well, let's just say I am busy:
  • sending out We Haven't Received Your Dues Yet postcards
  • promoting District 2's own club building, community resource - JobMasters
  • planning the last DECM meeting so we go out with a bang
  • planning the first TLI meeting of the new year
Not to mention expending a lot of energy on closing down our store. Our six week time line suddenly got crunched into a week and a half. And they expect us to sell stuff too :-)

Choose to Look at the Good Side

Yesterday I found out that my store was closing a whole month earlier than expected. This means I am out of a job May 30 instead of June 30. That's in a week and a half! That's four weeks less time to implement my plan, but even more crucial, four weeks of no paychecks.

Although I am upset with my company for their disservice to me and my co-workers, not to mention their customer base, I am making the choice to look at the positive sides to this (and there are a few). Here they are:
  • I will have lots of free time coming up
  • I will have time to pursue the seminar companies
  • I will have time to write my keynotes
  • I will have time to write my book
  • I will have time to market myself
  • I will have time to catch up on my reading
I was going to do all of this anyway. Most of it was going to have to be squeezed in between work. Now there will be no work to get in the way! I can start all of this in earnes in June, and not July. This could be good!

Monday, May 18, 2009

My Goals for the Challenge

1. Do Six Week 100 Push Up Challenge. (I got halfway through it before but I had tendinitis so bad in my wrists from work that I had to quit.)

2. Get hired on at a seminar company (Fred Pryor, SkillPath, etc.)

3. Develop 2 keynote speeches. (I've got a couple of ideas cooking.)

4. Put together ideas for a book (depending on which direction I take my keynote).

When I said I was in for the challenge yesterday I said I had 91 days of financial backing. Well, much can happen in less than a day. Today the company informed us that we are closing our doors May 27 instead of June 27. Ouch!

The downside - I have less time on my time line to get things done.

The upside - I'll have more time on my hands to get things done.

The 91 Day Challenge

Rich Hopkins has come up with a great idea. I'll let him explain it.

Every day, you are empowered to make choices. Whether its what you eat, what you say, or the actions you take, you are ultimately responsible for your results.

For the next 91 days, I will be chronicling my choices as I work to change my life - to Leap from Acceptable to Exceptional in my career, my health, and my family life.

What choices will YOU make, and how will YOUR life change? Jump in any time - 91 days is my choice - yours can be whatever you choose!

I am going to join in and be a Champion of Choice.
